R&D Strategies |
We see R&D as the key to sustainable growth for the Hitachi Cable Group, and we intend to strengthen our R&D capabilities.
Our R&D efforts center on reinforcing and developing element technologies needed to support the future growth and success of the Hitachi Cable Group. One area of focus is technologies for materials, including metals, resins and fibers. Another focus is electrical and electronic design technologies, such as high-field insulation and high-speed transmission technologies. We also commit resources to the development of mechanical technologies to ensure reliability in the production of our products. In the following priority target areas of our medium-term management plan, Plan "BRIDGE" covering fiscal year 2011-2013, we aim to link our R&D activities to the early development and commercialization of products that anticipate the needs of our customers and have the potential to stimulate market growth. The priority target areas are electric power infrastructure and next-generation energy, industrial infrastructure and information and telecommunications infrastructure. As we expand our overseas activities, we need to utilize and protect our technology resources, and intellectual property strategies are extremely important. We will strengthen our total R&D capabilities by devising and implementing intellectual property strategies that are linked to our business strategies.
R&D expenditure in the year ended March 2010 amounted to ¥9,612 million (ratio of R&D expenditure to net sale, 2.6%). In the future, we plan to maintain our R&D expenditure at around 2.5% of net sales.

R&D Systems |
Our R&D structure is made up of the Corporate Advanced Technology Group (the Research & Development Laboratory) and the R&D departments of the individual business groups. They coordinate their work to speedily develop technologies and products ahead of the times, analyze trends in technology and domestic and overseas markets and organize R&D staff training programs.
The Technology Planning Center in the Corporate Advanced Technology Group formulates R&D strategies, taking into consideration flexible options such as cooperation with outside parties. The Research & Development Laboratory conducts practical operations in line with these strategies by developing technologies and products in cooperation with related sections and customers. The Intellectual Property Office plans and promotes intellectual property strategies
based on business strategies and R&D strategies. The development sections in individual business groups also work to develop products directly related to their businesses in partnership with the Corporate Advanced Technology Group.
